I was looking for some big northern water snakes, Nerodia Sipedon, in a local stream this weekend. I spotted one poking her head out from under a rock that was partially submerged. I carefuly tilted the rock, which moved quite easily, to try to get a better look... then the rock shifted. The snake was pinned and the rock was too heavy to lift. I tried to move it off her but I think I made it worse! Despite my best intentions I had killed her. I felt sick to my stomach. Still do. The moral of the story, and maybe it should have been obvious to me before, is that if you are going to move something whilst herping be sure that you can safely lift it if you need to.
