The worst possible outcome

HotRodHerps Jun 21, 2004 10:16 AM

I was looking for some big northern water snakes, Nerodia Sipedon, in a local stream this weekend. I spotted one poking her head out from under a rock that was partially submerged. I carefuly tilted the rock, which moved quite easily, to try to get a better look... then the rock shifted. The snake was pinned and the rock was too heavy to lift. I tried to move it off her but I think I made it worse! Despite my best intentions I had killed her. I felt sick to my stomach. Still do. The moral of the story, and maybe it should have been obvious to me before, is that if you are going to move something whilst herping be sure that you can safely lift it if you need to.

I had the same experience years ago. I was 5 years old and chasing a fence lizard - the chase ended with a similar outcome. I learned from that though, and haven't made the same mistake in the 28 years after that.

My second Nerodia went under a rock when I was young. I pushed the rock over, but the snake apparently moved with it and its skull was crushed. I was quite crushed, but accidents do happen. Havn't done that since.

And the sign says "No long hair freaky people need not apply." So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do. So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you."-Tesla

"NO long haired freaky people NEED NOT apply"...so does that mean that they SHOULD apply? Double negative, dude...didn't MHS teach you'se anything?

Not really. I learned that memorial is full of a lot of spoiled little rich kids and that Memorial girls really are not worth the time of day. We really need to get out soon for some herping. BTW, I am not going to be cutting my hair anytime soon (heard about what you told Scott aka george washington...he is the one that needs a haircut!!!!). Take it easy bro.

George Washington? Nah, not my line...Scott needs to practice "safe herping", he's been out with too many people lately. Now, I did say something about seeing that hairstyle on many a young Mustang...dude, you're a trendsetter! When do you have Fish Camp?

snakeguy88 Jun 23, 2004 12:37 PM

No clue when I have fish camp. I don't think I am attending it. I am going up for orientation in like 2 weeks or so (July 8-9). As for the hair, most kids with the long hair have cut theirs. I plan on growing it out very long since I want to be just like brandon bowers when I grow up haha.
