why is my beardie swollowing a lot? help

spottedragon Jun 21, 2004 02:11 PM

My bd is young and when he sunbasks he swollows like he is trying to itch his throat... the temp is at 115F if not a tad lower. He has been doing this for a while. He eats good and I do spray him once or twice a day. Does he have a resperatory infection? Stools have been normal. He gets 12 hours of light. Bathed every week or so. Clean cage. Still just eating crickets.

Bearded dragons dont sweat so "swollowing" is there way of cooling down.. your little beardie might be to hott

Beardies do not swallow to cool down, they hold their mouths open to cool down.

The swallowing is probably him just working newly discovered muscles and also blowing himself up with air. Kinda like if want to make yourself burp you force air into your stomach.

Try to see if you notice him get a little bigger each time he does this. If he does then it's no problem at all.

FYI, beardies fill up with air for a couple of reasons that I know of. One is so they can increase their surface area towards a heat source to heat up better and another is to make themselves look bigger to predators or rival beardies.
