Question about Fire Skinks.....

mmfrankford Jun 21, 2004 03:52 PM

Hello everyone.
OK I already have leopard geckos and a corn snake. I just acquired a young fire skink on Saturday that is about 8 inches head to tail tip. Basically saved him/her from a jerk at our local reptile show. Anyway I have him in a 10 gallon right now with about an inch and a half of lizard litter substrate. And here are my questions? Thanks for answering.
1. What is the ease or difficulty of care for a fire skink? Basically did I get in over my head or am I OK.
2. What is the best cage setup?
3. What is the best food combos? I feed my leos mealworms and occasional waxworms, is that OK for the fire skink?
4.I know him/her has to acclimate. Curious do they move much, it's been staying in one area under the substrate. When will it eat? Am I just stressing to much?

Thanks!

10 gallon would be bare minimum for a fire skink try to move up to a 20L as soon as you can. For bedding I prefer a mix of forest floor bedding and sphagnum moss. You can also use bed a beast and spagnum. They do need humidity and love to burrow in their bedding. They will get quite tame and can be lovely pets. Due to humidity requirements I prefer undertank heaters over heatlamps. Give it a spacious water bowl as they love to bathe.

Crickets, superworms, silkworms and a weekly pinky mouse or two can make a good diet. Mine also like canned low fat dog food which I mix with hardboiled egg with the shell and chopped rich green veggies.

Hope this helps

I've been keeping fire skinks for a few yrs now and i'll say this, they are the easiest and friendlist lizard i've had. I dont know about BTS sorry so my opinion might be bias.
10 gallon is good for a juvinle but as an adult a 20 gallon might be better, that way as well you can add another, they do get along well with each other.
Also they like a low wattage light, mine i see basking every now and then.
Food: i found these guys will eat almost anything and are not picky. If i dont have crix they will eat mealworms, which i find easier to keep the cage clean with that. so what ever is the with between the eyes in leangth is alright for food, if its worms put them in a dish.
The ground u have seems find maybe add a little as these guys will bury themselves all day long, coming out when ur gone, when the know u better they'll come out more.
Heating is simple, a small heat pad a one end will work fine.
I'll be glad to answer anymore questions just leave a post.
