Sick Cham.

mrcham Jun 21, 2004 04:35 PM

i have a friend in cali. who raises chams, who when i need advice i call, he's been a TRUE herper since he was a kid so i trust him pretty well!
so when my favorite cham got sick (her eye was swollen shut) and i didn't have the money for a vet. i gave him a shout
i was frantic while i was explaining to him the problem
i went on and on for five minutes atleast probably becuase she was my favorie cham.
finally when i was done explaining it to him he said dont worry he knew what to do!
he told me to give her antibiotics oraly he sent them next day air told me how to administer them and everything(he even sent me an eyedropper)...lol
in two weeks she was healthy as an ox with no sign of a swollen eye!

i'm not saying that i dont like vets all im saying is Life Happens and sometimes i dont have that luxury so with a little help from my freinds and my seeking an alternative means to heal my lil female everything turned out great!!!

p.s. she just laid another clutch of eggs 30

I'm glad to hear she's OK. You were lucky. Without trying to culture a swab or biopsy from the eye, inspecting the mouth and nares for related problems (usually something a vet would need to do) you could have been dealing with an unknown bug that was marginally sensitive to the med your friend had to give you. If it didn't happen to get rid of it the infection could return and do a lot more damage. I'm sure your friend is very knowledgeable and caring about chams, but without a some lab work you are taking a chance. I am NOT putting you or your friend down! Hobbyists have to help each other, but vets are part of the equation too. It's always a good idea to put some $ aside in a savings account for things like vet care.
