OMG One Hatched!!!

andydy464 Jun 21, 2004 04:45 PM

i had two eggs from my pygmy leaf cham (r.brev) and one hatched today! i think the other one died trying to get out. i had just left the eggs inside the vivarium with the adults where they where laid.

Now i know they need to eat really small food. the thing is so tiny.
and i know they require much more humidity
but is there anything else i need to know?

it is roaming around with one adult female. will she try and eat it? can i just leave it with her inside or do i need a separate cage?

its so tiny and cool. i have never had eggs before and obviously i have never had eggs hatch before so this is exciting.

I would put the little one in a seperate cage. I don't know squat about pygmies, but I would do it to be on the sfe side if he is that much smaller. I have never heard any instances of cannabalism in chameleons (parent to young, not different species like we discussed a while back), but you should be monitoring his food intake, and if you have a smaller cage, the humidity will be easier to keep high.

I would email Kammerflage Kreations. They have successfully raised brevs and could give you tips. You can reach them at calumma@aol.com

To my experience, it is better to place her in a smaller cage where she can find/catch food easily.

Congratulations! You might be able to find something for it to eat by combing (literally) the grass for leaf plankton. Run the comb thru the grass and shake the results off in a container and close the lid quickly. Then just dump anything you find into the cage with it. Order some small flightless fruitflys also. The 5mm ones not the 9mm. It will probably be a couple of weeks before it turns on to crickets. I would put him in a separate container. Just to be safe.

i usually dont like to add to other peoples posts
but the post above mine was perfect except for combing the grass
just wanna say make sure it doesnt have any chemicals init
like fertilizer, weed killer and such
i would move the babies to a smaller tank so they can find their food more easily
also even if the parents dont eat them you dont want them growing up to inbreed with parents which can happen in around 3 months

Carlton's advice is good - contact the Kammer's. As for feeding your new little one will need fruitflies and pinhead crickets. You can also otder springtails which are REALLY tiny thru Ed's Fly Meat www.edsflymeatinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=EFMI&Category_Code=LI

I would separate it out from the adults into something small so it doesn't have trouble finding it's food. Chek out the profile on Adcham, too. www.adcham.com/html/taxonomy/species/r-brevicaudatus.html

have fun!
