General question about keeping...

BennyD Jun 21, 2004 05:11 PM

How do you guys keep anacondas when they get so darn big? Are there any breeds that don't get huge? I love the way anacondas look i just know I could never keep one because of their size as adults.

8-10 foot is the average size of a yellow anaconda. A green anaconda male will be about 10-13 foot, average. Female greens can get rather large. I have a male green that is SO docile I cant even begin to descibe how calm he is, so if he get big who cares. He is so calm I can kiss him on the top of his head and he is not botherd with it at all, dont even flinch. I have never seen nor herd of a snake this docile, Have you?? A good male green will get large, no question about it. But how large is to large for you? I look at how a snakes disposition is more than how large he gets. A adult redtail can kill you just as fast as a adult anaconda can. You just have to be smart and use your head. If you really want a green anaconda contact Kelly Haller in this forum, he may have more babies for sale. He breeds extremely docile anacondas. He is the ONLY person that Id ever buy a green anaconda from.

8-10 ft is a large male/small female yellow anaconda...if you were to get a green you will have to deal with some more size. I have a super docile female green and two super docile granite yellows the green was nippy out of the bag but tamed quickly and i can take her out of a hide, water dish, under something...anywhere with bare hands and never concern myself with a bite. Only time she will get a little temper is under cool moving conditions with a lot of stress and lack of water and humidity (these should be rare or never conditions anyway). I have not been bit by either granite yellow yet but I have not had them long...none of my anacondas are head shy like other snakes. Don't get me wrong..I have seen some temper out of both anacondas...but if you get a cbb from a good person (kelly is certainly a great source for greens) you should have little trouble. Mark Petros is also expecting a lot of yellow babies soon and he is the best source I know for yellows...so if you want a yellow you should contact him since his life in the anaconda business will be short lived soon to move onto other projects. I would not get anything green from anyone but Kelly actually...I had so much trouble working with mine as far as feeding issues...It was fun and a pain all at once and I would not sell her for anything now...but it isnt worth it for a lot of people. Besides...I think Kelly Haller is the only person out there now who can honestly tell you 100% the sex of your animal

I think I was on chat with you last night. Anyways, there is a number of things to consider when thinking about keeping a anaconda. Size is definately up at the top of those things. This would exclude a green female for most people. A green male would be the next largest at 12-14' average. Then come the yellows. I believe when I talked to you in chat you weren't interested in the yellows and also didn't have your own place. This considered your only choice would be a male green. It would need an enclosure at least 6x2x2' If you can find the space for an enclosure that big then you need to consider the cost of feeding it. That all depends on where you buy the food from but you will need to plan on an adult eating rabbits. Once full grown they should be on a schedule of once every two weeks.
I think my recomendation to you would be to wait on the conda and save up the money to get your own place first. Anacondas will still be here when you get situated.
For a nice pic of an adult male you can search username 'kelly' pics in the gallery. I think he had a pic of a male being held by two women if I remember right.
If you do still decide on getting a conda you need to get it from the right place. There's been plenty of posts about just that, below.
I sure hope it was you I was talking to in chat last night. Otherwise I'll look stupid and I've NEVER done that before. LOL.
Here's a pic of my female in her tub. The picture quality isn't the greatest but I liked how the orange facial markings showd up on this one.
