I'm thinking about selling 10 neonates I just hatched out and I'm wondering about what fair market value is.
Thanks in Advance

I would say, depending on how "possible" they are, $75 for males and $125-150 for females.

Sell the poss het males as normals...someone may give you a 100 if they are 66%...the females you could get 200 for if they are 50% (doubtful) maybe 200-250 for the 66%ers if you are lucky. Check out some of the bigger breeders to see what they charge. Of course, on here, you probably won't get the same money, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Personally, I don't pay anything over Normal value for anything that's poss. het. Why would I I pay bunches extra for a maybe?

But those are my standards.

Some people are definitely not interested in possible hets. I think there is a basic personality difference between those who are interested in possible hets and those who would never consider them.

To me, possible hets are the only way to go. I can't afford the morph and in most cases not even the 100% het so the possible het is my only chance. I know that it's likely that half of my possible het projects will not pay off but hopefully half will and I'll be able to produce a morph I would not be able to buy for years.

If I actually had a bunch of money I might even buy possible hets anyway. I like the idea of getting in cheap even though it costs me a lot of extra work (more animals to hopefully cover the odds) and is unsure.

Here is my opinion on possible hets.

1-If you cannot afford a pair of hets for the morph you are interested in, you cannot afford that particular morph. If you are looking at Caramel albinos, and cannot afford a pair of 100% hets, my advice would be to get a pair of 100% het ghosts, or albinos, before getting possible het caramels.
2-If you go the possible het route, TRY to get a 100% het male and possible het females.
3-Expecting morphs from possible hets, and getting all normals is a good way to sour on the ball python hobby, and to be unsure if you really just got normals.
4- I have found if you buy possible hets, by the time you prove them out, you could actually afford 100% hets!!

Most everyone seems to be either definitely for or definitely against possible hets. I’m kind of glad that enough people are against them to keep them steeply discounted for me to afford.

I like my odds that some of my projects will pay off and I will not be too upset with the ones that don't as at least I had a lot of fun along the way and don't have much more than time in any of them. By spreading my small investment around I feel better about the risk. Of course the down side is having to keep a few more animals than I would like (or rather my wife would like). If you have more time and space than money and are willing to take risk possible hets might be for you.

I have a 1999 66% chance het caramel male that has yet to breed for me. If he had been a high dollar 100% het (caramel gene is not a good example as I've seen those surprisingly reasonable) from my only project I would be more bumed about it. On the other hand, I'm hoping to breed two of the three daughters of my 50% chance het stripe for next summer (still have a feeding job cut out for me on that one). I'm realistic about my odds of producing a stripe in 2004 being low but I don't even know what I would have had to pay for hets to have a shot at producing one that soon (probably 20 to 40 times what I have in that project).

You both make some valid and interesting points. And provided me with some ideas and "food for thought".

I agree with Randy, here. I can afford some of the male 100% hets, but I will have to depend on possibles for most of the females (if I can find them) if I want to avoid having to wait two generations for a morph to hatch.

Mike_S Jun 21, 2003 06:35 PM

I agree possibles are the way to go for females. 100% het for the males.
