Tegu Or Monitor????

Dragon_Tamer Jun 21, 2004 06:58 PM

I was thinking about tegu's and monitors's, and was wondering, which one would be less maintenance and will be less aggressive. i already understand that they are both aggressive but i think if i get them as babies and use the right caution i think ill be able to tame them down.

they are both aggressive? i've got monitors and tegus. everything i have is calm, and i dont hardly get anything out except for Taz my big male Argentine BW Tegu. And he is as calm as they come. i have a couple of large Blackthroats that i only care for. feed, water daily. and just check on them, but when i need to i can get them out without a problem. tegus will tend to be on the calmer side, it also depends on what species of monitor you get. though both will need very large cage. the choice is really up to you. if i had to choose between my Blackthroats and my Argentine Tegus, i would choose the tegus.

I agree with Matthew. The ratio with monitors being more aggressive is higher because there are so many different types of monitors compared to Tegu's. I have 2 Argentine tegus that I would trust to me more calm that any dog. I also have a Savannah monitor that is quite literally, a "lap lizard". I just got a baby water monitor that is about 17" and so far, it is a real sweetie (I've only had it for a week, so I'm not sure if it is really showing its personality or not).

As far as maintenance, I think in the first year or so maintenance is extrememly high for both types. Luckily my sav will only deficate in his water tub, and for some odd reason, my Tegu's will no longer deficate in their cage, they wait until I let them out. When I get them out, I put them in the kitchen on the paper and they do their business So cage cleaning has gotten A LOT easier.
