Mouth sores? Bad teeth?

Donna-AZ Jun 21, 2004 08:12 PM

I picked up an adult male bearded dragon today, he seems to have a slight underbite, the very front of his jaws are not aligned. When I inspected his mouth, half of his tongue is swollen and he has a few swollen areas surrounding the very last teeth on his upper jaw. Some of his teeth are black, all of my other dragons have very white teeth. I'm thinking the sore is from an infected tooth. Has anyone seen this? I wasn't able to get him into a vet today but I did soak some q-tips in Listerine and clean up the area really well which resulted in some slight bleeding and then put some ambusol on the area for pain relief.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone has ever had dental problems in a beardie, I've had them for over 10 years now and haven't, I'm just kinda wondering what to expect from the vet.

Sorry I've got no advice for you here, I've never dealt with this sort of problem.

Perhaps they will treat it with antibiotics or something, if it's an infection. There is also a chance it could be an old injury that is developing into mouth rot. I know that they don't like to use anesthesia on reptiles so they wouldn't be able to clean it's teeth like they would a dog or cat, but hopefully they will have some kind of medicine for whatever it is.

I am very curious about this though, since I actually work for a dentist it kind of intrigues me. Please when you do get him to a vet and find out more let us know.

Good luck.

its probably mouth rot. Obviously the place you bought him does not take very good care of there reptiles and you probably shouldnt buy from them again.

Don't assume I bought him and that suddenly where I got him from his a horrible place or person. I took him knowing his history.

well pretty much the only way he couldve gotten the problem is from improper husbandry.
