Finds near Devils Punchbowl in southern California

metalpest Jun 21, 2004 08:29 PM

Went out to some roads near the punchbowl in hopes of finding a southern pacific rattler, no luck. Slow night, found the following:

DOR cali Kingsnake
1 AOR (pictured) 1 DOR glossy snake
1 AOR juvy pac gopher
1 unidentified object- I could have sworn I saw a small snake but when I stopped and searched, I found nothing on the road that would have called for a stop. I though I saw it moving towards the shoulder so maybe it escaped us.

Hey, do they still have that little nature center up at the Punchbowl? The guy who ran it used to have several snakes on display, including a 15 ft. Burm. Of course, that was quite a few years ago now. Does Vallermo ring a bell?

I dont know any names, and Ive never seen a burmese there. Just local snakes last time I went. It must have been early fall, they had helleris, cerastes, and scutes, and I recall a shovel nose on display, that was the first time I saw one. Also, a banded gecko. But like I said its been awhile, things may have changed. It seems to be different every time. We just drove the backroads in the local hills to see if we could find anything, and I wouldnt say it was entirely successful, since we were specifically searching for helleris.
