you should just keep trying. my step mom HATES everything i have. my dad likes them. so i went on and got my first tegu from AgamaInternational anyway. thats what i did

i re-read my first post and i will explain what i did more in depth. like i said my step-mom does not like my reptiles, while my dad really likes them. so my dad told me i could get one. so i did. i didnt just go out and get one without them knowing. just thought i should clear that up.

Please do NOT go against your parents wishes and get one behind their back, it will only show you are not responsible and do not listen.
Instead show them that you are very serious and interested in Tegu's. Do you research, then let them know what you know. Show that you can be responsible enough to take care of one. Let them know you are willing to accomidate the tegu and will either build or help build a cage for them. WOW them with your enthusiasm and intelligence of the animal you want.
Good luck!!!!

Yeah, I had to wait until I moved out to get my first herp. Maybe convince them of something smaller and easier to manage first. Leopard geckos and crested geckos make excellent first time herps. Or a corn or king snake (though we all know alot of people are not big fans of snakes). These are much smaller and more easily managed starter species than a big old dinosaur like a tegu.

African Fattail Geckos, cornsnake, bearded dragon. Take a 20 gallon tank with some landscape and a few green anoles, treefrogs, even a small toad out of the yard. A simple terrarium like this can be loads of fun.

i have a leopard gecko. she is pretty fun, but i want somthing that is real active. i get bored so easily.

cillie Jun 23, 2004 05:30 PM

beardies are active, same with crested geckos.

they spend most of their day sleeping and basking

BTW, I dont think age is as much a factor as maturiy and responsability. If you want to show your parents you are ready for a big lizard, write a proposal and a contract or them. write down all the good and bad points, all the expenses involved both initial and long term and write down what your responsabilities would be in taking care of a tegu including a time schedule to show no conflict with school and other activities.

good luck.

this is my daughter with fred our 20 lbs Red Tegu.
