Heres another southern pacific I removed today.

Jasonmc Jun 22, 2004 01:36 AM

This little southern pacific being around 15 inches, I removed from under a school bungalow in thousand oaks. When trying to capture the snake it tried to get away from me by going further under the bungalow. It was kind of hesitant about going too far under which struck me as strange. It would only move a foot ahead of me and stop until I would try getting it again. After catching the snake, I told the principal that there might be something else under the bungalow that the snake sensed was there. That's when the principal told me that an adult california king lived under there until recently. That would explain the snakes different behavior. Since the kingsnake has been gone (end of last month, death by parent) they have seen three southern pacifics.
Thats the end of my little adventure for now. Until the next call. Here is a picture of the snake I caught today.

Yea,
The staff were upset that the parent killed it. They said the king was cool and the kids loved it. Hopefully a new king will move in.
Its amazing how many of the people living in snake country have no clue to the snakes in their area.
Most of the calls that we respond to, the people think a rattlesnake bite is a simple harmless thing. They think its a simple shot from the clinic and then they go home.
So you can imagine the shock on their face when you explain the true complexity of a snake bite to them.
Usually the remark I get after talking to them about snake bites is, "can you get me some kings to release on my property"?
I don't do that either. Just need to ensure them that a new king will come around in time.
Sad storie for the kings and other snakes here in california. Unfortunatly most of the snakes around here meet the shovel and not me ( well hopefully that will change as I grow).
Thats my two cents.
