Freshly Hatched California Kingsnakes

DanielC Jun 22, 2004 01:47 AM

They all hatched out just fine. I had to tie off 3 umbilical cords, but the rest of the babies came out with their yolk's fully absorbed and seem just fine.

Final count was 7 healthy babies.

2 stripe/abberant
3 B&W banded
2 banded albinos

I havent bothered to sex them yet, but im hopin the 2 abberant's are females, because they have a date with their father in a few years if they are

Couldn't the inbreeding lead to bad thing for their children? Are there recessive diseases and whatnot in snakes?

Not enough that you would have to worry about it. Its done ALL the time in the reptile breeding industry. Its quite a common practice

Are those all from one clutch? What were the parents?

Mom was B&W banded with unknown genetics.. Dad was Banded Albino..

The mother was given to me as a male as a matter of fact, come to find out HE is really a she. So i set out on a search to find a breedable male for this season. At the october reptile show in Seattle i found my male.

He was offered as a longterm pet that they simply didnt want any longer, and i picked up a breeder size male who was the nicest kingsnake ive ever handled, for $50.

So i was just expecting a clutch of banded het albino babies.. the abberants and stripes were a nice suprise.. its nice to see shes really het albino too

Amazing. How do abberant genes work? I have one abberant and one banded that I plan to breed, just wondering what to look forward to!

I really wish i knew. LOL

I took out my albino male this evening, and the very last 3" of his tail is striped.. but that wouldnt have led me to believe that he would throw me some almost fully striped babies

Thats whats gonna make breeding ur pair so much fun! Not having a CLUE whats going to hatch out
