All hatchling Irian Jayas are varying shades of red with very little black when they hatch and then gain black pigment shortly thereafter. Some gain more black pigment than others.

I'm working with a line (dubbed the GQ line after the original breeder, Gary Quirk) that doesn't develop much black even into adulthood, but it's not known yet whether it's a predictable genetic trait or just something that has to be line bred. I just hatched out two clutches from a "low-black" male bred to two normal (plenty of black) females, so I should know in a few months whether it appears to be an incomplete dominant type gene, or more of a polygenic trait, which I could line breed i order to refine the trait. Either way, it's a pretty exciting project. Here's some pics...
