What medium size boa is right for me?

MountainLyon Jun 22, 2004 02:58 AM

Hello folks, I've been hanging out on the kingsnake forum and field notes forum a little lately but this is my first time here. I only have a WC cal king right now but I used to have a BCI that I raised from a baby until she was too big for my closet. I had hoped to have a bigger place by the time she reached that size and my roomates weren't cool with having it cruising around the house, so I gave her away to a good home where she has her own room.

I'm considering another boa but a smaller one this time, for a different reason than before, now I have back problems so I shouldn't get a heavy snake that I might have trouble lifting. I like the good calm temperment of BCI and fairly low maintenance. What medium size boas share the positive attributes of BCIs? BRBs sound interesting, certainly beautiful, but I'm not sure I want to deal with the high humidity requirements. I'd like to learn more about the size/weight, docility, and ease of keeping of Dumerils, Hog Island, or others. Any info/advice appreciated.

I have 2 hogg island boas and they are absolutely alovely and eat very well. I would try getting some of them but make sure you get pure ones because there are not many of them nowadays.

Good luck in your search

a Hogg's Island or Nicuraguan would all be solid choices. About the Brazilian rainbows...I keep 7 of them and the humidity is a preety easy thing once you get the enclosure set up right. If that interests you there are many willing people to answer your question on the Rainbow Boa forum.

Good Luck, Chris

here and elsewhere. I know very little about them other than they are attractive and rare. What is the average length and weight of a Hogg island boa or a Hogg hybrid?

A book I read spoke highly of the Dumeril's, so I'm curious why it wasn't recomended.

Thanks for the responses, all of the ideas are worth considering.

Certainly nothing wrong with Dumeril's. I just happen to think Hog's are preetier...I'm sure some others would disagree. It all depends on what you like.

In the wild, Hog's only grow 4-6 feet. But on a diet of fattening lab rats, they can can 7 ft or more in captivity. My advise would be not to feed them like you were feeding a mainland locality BCI. Less frequency, and smaller meals.

Good luck, Chris

P.s. If you haven't looked at PMHerps Hog's, you should, they're killer! Also, though it's everyone's personal preference, pure Hog's are much nicer than crosses, IMHO...not to menchen there is no fresh genetic material being imported for Hog's Island localities...so crossing and inbreeding takes away opportunities to see pure ones many years from now....but that's just my two cents...go with your gut.

the color of the normal Hog island never did much for me, I like the look of Dumeril's better, but the hypo Hog, wow!!! I'm afraid to check the price. With both Hogs and Dumeril's being somewhat rare I would sort of feel obligated to breed it. Not a bad thing, food for thought. Thanks again.

I you are concered about their rareness, remember that hypo hog's are a cross with another locality. BTW- photos never do a Hog's Isle boa justice...they really are dripping with color.

Take care, Chris
