mating ball and burmese

kelplar Jun 22, 2004 03:41 AM

I'm new to the whole snake experience and am loving it.A friend of mine who has been breeding snakes longer than me said that you could breed a ball python with a burmese python.I think he's lying to see if I'll try and breed them, but I'm not sure.Sorry if this seems like a stupid question to you pros, but an answer would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure it is scientifically possible but I do not think it would happen. It would be like trying to breed a huge great dane with a tiny little chiahua(sp?...taco bell dog). I do not think that a male burm would find the desire to breed with a little four foot snake. Honastly these are just my opinions but I really do not think it will work with out doing it by artificial fertilization. Todd

I have a male chow and my sister has a female dane. You should see him try. Nothin but air! Man is it funny!

i've never heard of success but have always been curious. I think if you had dwarf burmese pythons it would work no prob, but a regular burmese I would say the only way I could see it possible & safe for both snakes is with the biggest male ball you can find & a female burm at her minimum requirement. The other way around I would question the female ball getting hurt either by delivering snake eggs that may be a bit big for her, or through the process of mating itself...I have never seen a male burm's unit but I bet it's much bigger than a male ball's.....either way if you're gonna try just remember you will probably get heat for it....some people are into hybrids (myself included) but there's alot that don't agree with it as well...I understand why they dont like it but I cant help it I like em'.....

If i was currently breeding large pythons I would attempt this(very carefuly). Assuming I would know what I was doing. What could it be called? Burmilated python. Nice ring. I ahve no problem with hybrids as long as they cannot reproduce and excape and do bad things to any native wildlife.

The retic and the burm have been crossed. They are called Borneo Bateaters. I am not sure about the origin of their nake or who first crossed them but I think it was in the early 90's. They are quite interesting. Strange thing with snakes is that most hybrids are able to reproduce. Though most hybrids have high death rates of the eggs and very small liters they due reproduce. These are the hybrids that I can think of right now that have been done:
Bornea bat eater (retic x burm)
rock x burm
burm x indian
ball x angolan
Gaboon viper x Rhinoceros viper

I am sure that they are more but that is all I could think of right off the top of my head. Todd

Has anyone crossed a burm and a ball before?

A while back(I believe last summer/fall) on the venomous forum somebody posted pics of the result of accidental breeding. A timber rattlesnake was kept with a copperhead, they mated, and produced one or two babies. I have also heard of diamondback/Mojave crosses, and within the venomous "community" they seem to be almost as common as the bateaters. I have asked a few people if the burm/ball cross would work before(out of curiosity) and never did get a serious reply. It will be interesting to see if anybody tries the cross with the dwarf burms, but I think we're at least 10 years from an attempt, much less success, due to the rarity of the dwarves.

I'm thinking of doing a burm/ball but the burm is too small yet, plus I dont think people like hybrids.

Here is a link of other weird python hybrids.

Wow! That is the first I have heard about any thing like this. I knew about the rhino viper and gaboon. i have seen that one. I wonder what the temperment would be.
