Next Python after Ball?

cactuskent Jun 22, 2004 07:28 AM

I've kept Royal's for over a year now, and I wish to add to my collection, I was wondering what you think is the best python when moving on?
I would like a Python larger than a Royal/Ball, I can provide a viv up to 6feet long probably, and I don't want to be spending into the ££££ thousands(I'm in England)
Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking a red blood python, GTP.. but anything, please give you suggestions

Also, I had the thought of getting a lizard next (either a smaller monitor or a blue tongue skink)
I'm still very much undecided

Thanks in advance.

The carpet pythons are neat snakes. They are arboreal so like to hang out on branches alot. I have a jungle and she is a neat pet snake. Jungles get to 6-8 feet long but are not as big around as boas. They are a slender snake. Mine is 5 foot long now and doing good.
One thing I read about carpets is some will not eat anything but mice. I was fortunate to purchase one that switched to rats with no problem.
There is a neat web site about carpets .....www.ACReptiles.com

My green tree python was my second python. I never regreted it. They are amazing. I love them to death. The day after I bought him I was addicted.

I would reccomend just about anything you can take care of! From what I hear most GTP's are snappy. And red bloods are/can be very vocal. They are also picky about their humdity and temps. Though once you have those right, it's pretty easy from there.

my male(about 99%sure) red blood is about 3ft, VERY strong for a 3ft snake, and about as big around as a soda can (he is also a little over a year old).

So far his temperment has been awesome, only going to into "S" position once, and that was because I startled him!

His feeding is great, anything my bp's don't eat, he does (which besides how beautiful he is, is another reason I got him, he's my little garbage can! lol)

His feeding response is quite lazy (lays there with his jaw on the ground, opens up and waits for me to place the rats head in his mouth!) Though I have heard of some of them that go crazy the second they "smell" the food.

Just remember that Red bloods are mostly ambush predators and don't usually actively hunt their prey.
And just because they are fat looking, doesn't mean they are slow!

Pick what you like, study it, and if you feel you can handle it, get one!
