light bulbs in cabinet type cages

throatoyster Jun 22, 2004 09:35 AM

I'm bulding a cabinet style cage for all my snakes and my question is this: are snakes smart enough to stay away from the hot lights if there is no screen or anything protecting them? All of my set-ups I have now have the heat lamps on top of the screen lids, and a lot of times the snakes will get close to them and so on. It would save both space and cost if I could just put the lights in without buiding a screen around them, but I'm just worried the snakes might burn themselves if I don't. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have seen several incidents where a snake was severely burned and died from a bulb being in the open without a gaurd.. Another issue is if the snake breaks the bulb they can be electrocuted.

www.bigappleherp.com sells bulb cages. they screw to the top of the cage around the bulb, bottom opens so you can change bulb when it bolws. Works real well.
