N/P: Do snappers always do this???

herpheart13 Jun 22, 2004 12:41 PM

Today I was with some friends and we checked our turtle trap in a pond. We caught 7 turtles: 2 stinkpots, 1 musk, 2 yellow bellies, and 2 common snappers. The biggest snapper was almost 35 pounds and it was HUGE!!!!! When we were trying to get it out, it growled twice. Is this normal for snappers??? I don't know much about these guys, but it seemed kinda weird!!

it's not at all uncommon for snappers to hiss and/or make a gutteral 'growling' sound when yuo haul them from the water. it's standard practice, especially in wild turtles that are not acclimated to human contact.
