I got my new and improved Nile today

cito Jun 22, 2004 12:41 PM

I just recieved my baby Nile today from AAA Reptile and I knew right away that it was in much greater health than the one I recieved last week from a different company. Although I was a bit puzzled in their shipping method (a 7 inch monitor in a 3 inch container), I could tell that this monitor was very healthy. I picked it up out of the box, and it was at least 2 times as fat as the other one I recieved and was much more alert with it's tongue. It even hissed when I first picked it up, although it hasnt attempted to bite yet. When I put it in the cage it ran straight for the hide spot and hasnt come out yet as opposed to the other one which stayed in the same spot out in the open for the entire night. I'm very pleased with this one and I'm expecting it to be a very pleasant long term friend. Should I be expecting it to be biting by tonight or tomorrow once its gotten warmed up? Also, I'm planning on giving it 2 pinkies today and 3 pinkies tomorrow, would that be ok an ok feeding schedule for each week? Thanks

Suggest you give it at least a day or few to get calmed down and acclimated before you feed and/or handle it. It's been through a lot the past 24 hrs! Just make sure it has fresh water. Congrats and Cheers to your new companion!

Though many are against feeding the same day, my take on is if it'll eat - feed it. If not give it some time. Post some pics soon.

Well I just dropped some crickets in over his hole to his spot and he jumped out and ate them all. No pinkies at the petstore so I couldnt try those. He's looking very active and alert I'm so happy. Just curious, at what size do you guys start feeding your monitors pinkies?

Glad to hear that hes eating. I started feeding my water rat pinks at 15 inches and as far as i know, they can take mice pinks as soon as their born, depending size of course. A good rule to follow is to never feed prey larger than the head of the monitor. Good luck with the little he/she and have fun!
