mitchelli in So-Cal?????

zonataspotter Jun 22, 2004 03:50 PM

I am attempting to collect photos of many of the different color phases of Mitchelli in the so-cal area, but I am having a hard time finding them. Is it getting too late in the year, or am I looking in all the wrong places? Would anyone have any ideas on locals that they might be willing to share? Thanks!

you're looking in the wrong place.

Where is the right place to find speckled rattlers? I have become very frustrated with my repeated failure, and I have had no problems finding other croats. Do you have any suggestions?

Rocky areas. I hear they are very secretive and hard to find. I know someone who has been hunting for 20 years, hes only seen three. Two in one night on the same road.

Almost every trip to Whitewater yields a speckled. Also, the Ortega Highway in Orange County is a hot spot. Good luck

traffic is non-stop these day's, commuter traffic has increased immensely. Good place to get yourself killed, too.

I have some in my garage, but I didn't know there were any in SoCal.

They like loose rock flakes or ruble. They Occupy the same areas as c. ruber and boas. The C. ruber's seem to like the larger boulders/rocks though.

Zonataspotter,
They are out there. I have seen them in all the places mentioned in the posts below plus other spots.
There are some awsome orange with black speckles out there. I almost ran over one last week and saw a DOR.
It takes luck. He He and alot of road trips to spot them.
I have seen them on the same road on different days and they have been totatly different shades very tan with black specs
and very orange with black specs.
P.S. If I was going to keep a HOT snake Mitchelli would be it!

If I see one this weekend I'll take a pic.

Thanks for the encouragement, I did find one in Palm springs about a week ago, he had been hit by a car. He was not hit badly, and I did some stitching and cleaned him up. I was afraid that the overall stress would kill him, but he is starting to recover. The big struggle will be getting him to eat being that his injuries were located around his jaw. I have my fingers crossed . . . . .

I hope he makes it.
