monitorman315 Jun 22, 2004 04:28 PM

a problem with multiple mothers fighting over litters? I had 3 new mothers in the same cage playing tug of war with babies with a few being injured when one mom went over an took another pups- picture a pup being pulled from both ends in 2 different directions. I decided to take out 2 of the mothers and their litters and place them in separate cages but my deliema with this is i wanted to breed hard(back to back to back) for a few months since this is my first attempt at breeding. I really need to stock pile pinks. Any advice???

Can you just freeze off the pinks being fought over? I have had moms fight over pups, sometimes to doing harm. Generally it settles down in a few days and they either community nest them or they divy them up. You can do what you do or you can leave them and see what happens. I need rat pinks a lot too lately and (almost thankfully) I have someone who will eat them at any given day. So if there is bickering, I take that pup out.

Just as often as not....I have had moms that followed my lead and let me divide litters back up and leave them. They won't fight over them for too many days in my experience.

If it has been more than a couple days since they gave birth the male may have bred them back already for you.

I just seperate my pregnant moms when they show until after the pups are weaned. They never fight.

take the newest litter and freeze it and place all moms and pups back into their original enclosure together with the male. I figured they'll sort out who gets what and so on and since those pups are a bit bigger with some even growing fur they should be able to withstand any disputes between moms. Id like to thank you 2 for helping me come to a decision in this matter.

PS In the future, since they'll most likely still be weanlings when the next litters are dropped, can i just take out all the pinks or showed i leave a couple or so behind?

If she has a bunch of others still older pups and you need the pinks....pull them. I leave a pup or two only if I have a mom that only has that litter and has nursed them for more than a couple days. I figure she might go nuts if you just pulled every pup she has. If you are leaving some, I don't think it matters what size they are if they are still nursing.
