uroplatus sikorae

lismil Jun 22, 2004 05:58 PM

I was wondering if there is any uroplatus out there that looks almost EXACTLY like a sikorae that is not a sikorae. Or, if some sikorae are from different areas, and have different coloring or something. I have what I think is a female mossy leaftail, Ive had her for about a year now. I just bought a male who arived today. As far as size, and shape, they are identical. They also look exactly the same from the underside as far as coloring and texture. There are some differences from the top though as far as color and texture. The female has dull light green eyes, and the male has BRIGHT almost flourescent looking dark green eyes. Also, the texture of the female seems a little bit smoother. The females coloring is probably piebald? Shes almost striped or blotched in patterns of only two colors. Light green, and almost white. She also has dalmation spots. Her colors aren't together at all. The male is a BUNCH of different colors, and they are all swirled together or marbled looking. He looks more like moss than she does. I figured the colors might be a little different, but the eye color and the texture of the skin? I would post pics if I had a digital camera, but unfortunately I dont. Im going to assume they are but uroplatus sikorae, as I believe they both are....just curious.
Thanks

Check the mouth to be sure, sikoare sikoare has a black throat and sikorae sametie has a more regular pink one. Regarding the differnt colors and markings in sikoraes they seem to vary a lot, i hatchad a sikoare sikoare abput 5 months ago that is almost completly ehite with only some rustred blotches on her face while her brothers and sisters came out more natural looking (the corkbark/litchen look)

Here is a pic of my breeder female.

Best regards

actually you female looks exactly like mine does, color pattern wise at least. your male intruiges me because all i have been able to get are the straight lined pattern males. what i think the diffrence is is that they come from diffrent forests or locales and that is the explanation for the texture and color diffrence. nice pair you have and good luck breeding.

OK,
I did some research last night and found some results that dissapointed me. I found out there are two species of sikorae. Sikorae sikorae, and sikorae sameti. The sikorae sikorae has black inside the mouth, and simeti has a pink inner mouth. The info I read said that the sikorae and sameti will not breed, and even if they did it wouldnt be desirable, but then someone else said they thought it might be possible for them to breed. I looked inside the pairs mouths last night, and one is black and the other is pink. So, is it true that they will not breed? Thanks

well...i dont know for sure about this, but your finding might not be so disappointing after all. i may be wrong, but i think sikorae sameti is harder to come by than sikorae sikorae. so yea, you might have some difficulty breeding them, but you got a lesson in buying your herps. ALWAYS do your homework before buying an animal. granted there isnt a whole lot of info available about uroplatus in general. a person uneducated about leaf-tails could more than likely be sold several species as one. the importation process is wishy-washy, some importers cannot correctly identify their sex, species, let alone subspecies. sometimes, that works out for the collector's advantage, because you can sometimes get females cheaper than they would normally be sold. there have even been rumors of people finding much rarer species in imported lots. dont be discouraged. you can always wait for the next time some uroplatus come around, then you're halfway there for two breeding pairs, one sameti, one sikorae. anyhow, good luck!

Hi lost my female sikorae and bought another one which turned when it arrived I thought it looked different so looked inside the mouth and realised it was a sameiti. But luckily I had a young sikorae which has turned out to be a female, they all live together happily I have found the sameiti loves being sprayed with water where as the sikorae tend to shy away.
