Beetles with my crickets...

lisa_cristin Jun 22, 2004 06:18 PM

I recently bought 100 crickets from my local pet store. Unfortunately, there was a few beetles mixed in with them. This has happend before and I ended up with an infestation in my gecko tank. I think I got rid of them all. Should I get rid of the crickets as well? Does this mean the pet store is not as clean as I thought it was? Or is it normal for beetles to end up with crickets and I'm making a fuss for no reason?

Thanks,
Lisa

What kind of beetles are they, the mealworm ones?

I'd think the mealworm ones are ok, but i'd still doubt your supplier though. Its kinda gross anyways

They're not mealworm beetles. I wish they were, I can't seem to get any from my mealworms. There was acctually a couple of different kinds of beetles I think.

Ew then, i'd complain.
if they're all sorts of ramdom beetles they must be pretty unorganized

i've got bloody tons of beetles but no eggs. And i keep finding them on the ground in the mornings... its annoying.
You can tell when the aliens turn into beetles they get black/brown eyes and legs, its a crazy change. If you see them darker like that expect beetles in like a day or 2 and the rest will follow.

They've been pretty good until now. I know they get their cricket shippment every tuesday so they may have come from their supplier. I'll tell them about it next time. I would feel bad asking for a discount or a refund because they allready give me a small discount. My little guys were so hungry tonight so I fed them. They missed their dinner last night because I had to work and couldn't pick up crickets. I hope the crickets were ok to feed, they were only 1/4" so hopefully they had less time to pick up any parasites or whatnot. The batch of large crickets I got for my frog is fine, no unwated bugs there.

I have one beetle still half in half out of the alien. It's been almost a week, I think it's probably going to die soon as it can't stay off it's back.

Good luck with your colony!!!

I think my other babies (mutts) have fleas. It sounds discusting, but I think I might too (I even shower everday, sometimes twice), lol. Ah pets, can't live with em, can't live without em.

well hopefully the crix won't have any problems. And i guess you'll have to go to the vet too to get rid of your fleas :D

Good new though I finally got some baby mealworms
i swear though i have 50 beetles and finally some tiny TINY worms. They're like the ones you find at the beach, like really gross looking cuz they move really quickly and don't seem to have a hard shell but they are the size of the mealworm poo.
never been so grossed out and happy at the same time! yay no more pet store for me!
Good luck with yours and check out i think her name is Leolovers lounge she has a really good mealworm set up fact sheet :D

No fleas, thank God. Just me being paranoid I guess.

That's awesome about your colony. Can the tiny mealworms escape easier than the full grown ones? I've checked out leolovers site, it is very informative.
