sorry, another silk worm question...

xNeViNx Jun 22, 2004 07:22 PM

this might sound wierd, or insulting to someone. but i want to know if any one knows how to make the "silk worm chow". cause i know its really expensive, and doesnt last very long when you have 10 leos to feed, that live off silk worms. i dont want any one yelling at me, saying how dare you try to rip off someone elses idia, or any thing like that. im just wandering if only one or 2 people have the formula for it, or is there one that everyone knows?
thanx alot

i dont know about making the silkworm chow from scratch, but if you buy the powdered stuff that you have to 'cook,' you save about 75% on the cost

nope. It's proprietary (I believe)and if it is like hornworm chow it will require ingredients that are difficult to get. You also need to work in and keep it in a sterile environment - tough to do without a lab

How's that Mulberry tree? You can use that thru the summer months and get the chow for the winter. All of the places I linked you to sell it and if you get the one you have to microwave it is a lot cheaper than the pre-made. The powder keeps for a very long time in the fridge and you can make just as much as you need. Even the cooked keeps for a few weeks in the fridge if you warp it well.

lele are you saying the powder needs to be refrigerated before you cook it? will it still be good if it sits out at room temperature for a month or two before its cooked?

lele Jun 23, 2004 08:42 PM

no, it's just that if you order 2 lbs and only need to make 1/4 lb (let's say all you have are little silkies) you would put remainder powder in a ziploc/palstic wrap, container, etc. and store in fridge as opposed to room temp. It will stay fresh longer therefore healthier for your silkies, thus your geckos (and other herps). Sunlight and warm temps will break it down sooner. From that 1/4 pound that you make you will want to have it over a period of days in order to feed and that should be refrigerated for sure - it will go rancid quickly once it is cooked if left at room temp.

did I confuse you more or make it clear...as mud! LOL! Mulberry Farms has all the info. The bottom line is refrigerate any left over - powder or made.
