Question for people who keep multiple roach species...

xelda Jun 22, 2004 09:05 PM

Do you find that your herps have preferences for certain species over others? Do you think their favoritism is taste-related or movement-related?

I'm curious because I just got lobsters, and my leos went nuts over them. I'd like to try out a few other species, but it seems like a strange idea to use one type of roach as a staple and then offer other types of roaches as treats.

Hi,

I breed Rhyparobia, Blaptica and two Blaberus species.

Most of my lizards, especially chams, prefer the Rhyparobia over all
Presumably due to their very soft exoskeleton, their rapid movements and their proportions which are more "mouth friendly" than those of the flatter species.
Blaptica are eaten by most lizards and I especially feed a lot of freshly born nymphs to hatchlings.
Only a few of my lizards love the Blaberus: very hard shelled, broad and spiny (especially the "winglets" in larger nymphs)

Hope that helps

Ingo

My leos did too. So did the beardies. The sugar glider and hedgehog didn't care for them. My savannahs love both lobsters and hissers. But the leos and beardies seem to like the lobsters. I always thought because, even small, the hissers are harder.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?
