Considering a red eye tree frog...need some info

monocledcobra Jun 22, 2004 10:06 PM

This would be my first tree frog. I have the finances to set it up anyway I can. I just need to know (step by step would be best) how to set-up an excellent enclosure. I need to know size, material, what to include, and how I should and where I should put the things in. Pictures of enclosures to go by would be appreciated. Also...I have a spare small ExoTerra waterfall..should I put it in the enclosure.

I know its a lot...but I want everything to be perfect and I want my frog to feel a "natural" setting.

thank you very much

red eyes are very sensitive frogs and are not suited well for beginning tree frog owners. But i have heard of people starting w/ them and had no problems. For info check out amphibiancare.com and go to care sheets. also just try a search on yahoo or google. best of luck to you

Here are some tings you should consider.

-They are noturnal. That means you will see them sleeping the majority of the time. I have 3 wild caught adults and they only get up once every other night to hunt and they don't even hunt that long. An average of 30 minutes to 1 hour and then they go sit in the water dish for a while then go back to sleep. It's nothing like watching them on national geographic.

-They are very touchy and can get sick very easily. One of my redeyes empty its bladder and looked like it was having an asthma attack a few weeks ago just because I went in there to trim the plants and I was at least a foot away from it.

-You should keep the enviroment in optimal condition. If your temperture or humidity is off for a few hours that can be enough to make a frog sick.

-You should never handle them even if they are captive bred. Also, its very hard to find adult captive bred redeyes for sell.

-In my experience, its better to buy adult wild caught redeyes over captive bred froglets. The froglets are a lot harder to care for then the adults because they are not very good at catching their food. They get stressed out if you put to much food in their tank. They will die if you don't give them enough food. You have to make sure that they are eating, that means counting pinhead crickets and fruitflies, etc.
