Embryo Development...

Sasheena Jun 22, 2004 10:10 PM

The 15 kingsnake eggs I've posted about were finally "declared dead" today when I found them crawling with maggots, some white and fuzzy (Santa Clause would have been envious) others brilliant sea greens.

The kids and I took them out and opened them up. ALL 15 eggs were "hard boiled" with solid inner parts. Bits of red from the dead blood vessels, some with blue green from the mold outside. All 15 had embryos about half the size of a kidney bean. Their little eyes were the size of large grains of sand.

I'm curious to understand what stage of development california kingsnake eggs might be that small size. (anyone can email me for photos of the fuzzy eggs and the little embryos... I don't have space on my kingsnake account to post more photos)

I'm just curious if there have been any studies about the development of snake eggs from conception, to being laid, to the time they hatch as there are for other kinds of animals.
