Hatching Crested Baby

Rob Jenkins Jun 22, 2004 10:49 PM

We were so happy to come home to this little one this evening. The tip of its tail was still sitting in the egg when we found it.

It was so calm when I took it out of the egg container, but it must've warmed up a lot in my hand because after a couple minutes it shot out of my hand like a bat out of hades. I can't believe it could be so alive so quickly. I guess when you spend a few weeks cramped in the egg you're ready to get outta there and get moving.

I thought this was a funny shot. When I got him in his home, he promptly ran to this position and stayed there til I left the room. I think he may be marveling at his ability to stick to the wall.

Here's a front shot

Anyone keep multiple babies in the same cage? I read in the new Rhac book you can, but do they ever drop tails because of each other?

This one's a couple months old now. How fast should they grow? It doesn't seem to like CGD or baby food too much (not enough to seek out the dish, at least), but loves small crickets. What ratio of live to CGD/Baby food do you feed cresties that are a few weeks old and how often do you feed them?

Thanks

Great pictures! I keep my hatchlings in small Kritter Keepers two siblings together. This makes it easy to moniter food intake and keep track of bloodlines. Once they are about 2-3 months old I move them to 19qt rubbermaid containers. In the past I would keep groups of 6-8 in similar containers but there would aways be a dramatic differance between growth rates of a couple of the dominant ones and the ones that get bullied.Once they become sexable 5-7 months I keep the males by them selves and a couple of females together in 10 gallon sized containers. That being said I have never had one lose a tail. Have fun!
