Need Help Catching Coral Snake

VivB1 Jun 23, 2004 05:05 AM

I live in Brandon, Florida.

About a week ago on June 15th, my Chihuahua came across a coral snake eating a lizard near my back door. I attempted to catch it but not being a seasoned snake catcher, all I managed to do is track it to it's hiding space -- the holes in my brick patio stairs. At that point, I thought I managed to trap it there by placing additional bricks in front of the holes. I then e-mailed someone in the Herp society in our area for advice. He got back to me last night and said to post here for a knowledgeable snake catcher.

I have not seen the snake for over a week. I did set up a plastic container sort of "trap" in front of the opening where I saw the snake go in. So far, I have not seen the snake in the plastic container. It is entirely possible that either--

(1) the snake has come out and gone back into it's hiding place without hanging out in the container;
(2) the snake has escaped and is now in some new hiding place.

Please e-mail me if you live in the area and would be willing to help me catch this coral snake.

A coral snake that eats lizards would be a pretty nice catch all right. Most of them are stubborn snake eaters. You might have one of the two look alikes, the scarlet snake or the scarlet kingsnake. Those are nice catches too, though you might consider just leaving it alone if this animal is one of the harmless look alikes. Did you happen to see what color its nose was?

Email me a phone number and I'll put you in touch with somebody in the Tampa Bay area who wants the critter. My email addy is atheris a^t usa d0t net.
