Is a 20 long really adequate for an adult?

Tigergenesis Jun 23, 2004 09:00 AM

I've never seen an adult corn, but when I look at a 20 long it looks so small. I was wondering what those who have adult corns think about that cage size.

Thanks for your opinions.

You have to understand that although your baby is likely always moving around looking for a way to escape, an adult is usually much more likely to lay about most of the time. Adult corns move mostly for: food, water, temperature, and sex (not necessarily in that order).

If you provide those things for an adult corn at the appropriate times, they simply are content to stay in one location. If a wild corn could have those things provided for them as do captive specimens, they wouldn't be moving about either.

20 longs are plenty for a single adult to use. Most breeders use racks that house adults in even smaller areas with no difficulties at all.

I was just having a hard time visualizing an adult in a 20 long since I don't even know how big (more like how 'thick') they get. I also sometimes like to double check info that is commonly found in caresheets, older books, etc. I sometimes find that experience of others disproves some older and/or common theories.

Thanks again!

Good question.

It really depends on each individual corn snake and how active they are, as well as their body length.

My 17 year old, 67 inch, het for nothing male is housed in a 40 gallon aquarium, and seems satisfied with the surroundings.

How large is the snake that you are in question about?

My guy still a little one, but I'm hoping to get more corns and planning for the future.

Thanks!
