I always have used a 20 gallon long tank with aspen as the bedding. They like to burrow, so I always like to use aspen as it will hold up the tunnels better than some other substrates. Hides are always a good thing to have, even though most of my hogs have never used them. The rest of the stuff is just standard, water bowl, heat pad or light, screen lid, etc.

Do they need a cagemate or are they fine by themselves???
J.L.
NOOOOOOOO! They can be cannibalistic. Snakes do not need other snakes to keep them company. They are fine on their own.

my hog lives in a small sterilite container with a snap-down lid (6"X5"X12" or so), which I drilled several small air holes into (more on the cool side than on the warm side). It's bedded with about 2" of aspen and has a water dish, humidity meter and 2 stick-on fishtank thermometers. I keep a heating pad under half of the box when the temps are below 70 and keep an eye on the temps at the 2 ends and where my hog spends her time--she seems to like it around 72 or so best, so when it's warm out I turn the pad off (this is a regular human heating pad). She's only 10" so she's quite comfortable in this small setup--when she gets bigger i plan on going to a bigger sterilite--as they aren't climbers they don't need tall cages, but more bottom space for them to dig around in is good, and the plastic containers are way lighter and easier to deal with than a glass aquarium, and most have pretty secure lids (though when they get bigger you should secure the lid with a bungee or some books just in case.

Those stick on fish temp check things are useless. They only measure the air temps.
Get a digi thermometer and put it right over the heating pad.
Human heating pads can get over 100 degress uncontrolled. A lamp dimmer should work fine.
Hognoses require 80-85 hot sides and 70-75 cool sides. (www.hognose.com)
My cage for my hognose is a small lee's repterium(sp?), aspen shavings, 2 small half logs (he does use them, he goes inside and pushes the aspen infront of the entrance to block out light) and a small water dish.

Thank you very much. Cool cage. How'd you set it up???
J.L.
Oh, that's Dennis Desmond’s cage from hognose.com.
I wish that were my cage. - That appears to be a vision cage with carefresh bedding. I prefer aspen and I use Rubbermaid containers because they are stackable, light and save space. You’re welcome and good luck!

do you use the old model/design Rubbermaids? ie the ones with clear or blue bottoms and blue lids with yellow snaps? they're the Snaptopper series and i can't find that particular model(models 4630 & 4631, 12 qt. and 18 qt.) at Wal-Mart anymore. they have a new design out, but i like the old one better. if these are the ones you use, where do you get them? or do you know of somebody other than Wal-Mart that might have them? thanks for your help!

Greg,
I'm actually using the good ole sterilite sweater boxes. I do have one of the blue top snap type rubbermaids and I like those a lot. I wasn't aware that they stopped making them. If you know the exact model number, do an online search and you'll turn up something. Maybe you could check on ebay even and find some old ones.
