Can I feed my boas salad?

Nightshade Jun 23, 2004 12:33 PM

Okay,
Just kidding. Wanted to get your attention. So I am contemplating getting into boas. I wanted something smaller and pretty. No Rosys or rubbers but no BCIs either. Thought about Hoggs, Nics and Rainbows. I don't know that I want to deal with the humidity issues of Rainbows but what about the temperaments of the Hoggs and Nics. I hear they are nippy. While I don't mind that at all (used to breed Retics), my girl and the kids don't really need to deal with that!

Thanks,
N

"but no BCIs either. Thought about Hoggs, Nics and Rainbows."

..but Hoggs & Nics ARE BCI...they're just BCI from a specific geographic range or locale. Also, you're right...don't get a rainbow boa if you don't want to deal with humidity issues.

I think that temperament of hogs or nics varies. I have 4 baby nics that are super friendly and never strike. I also have 3 hogs, and 2 are also friendly but one is the devil and has multiple personality issues (I can hold that sometimes one but I do not trust her since she has mood swings). LOL.

Therefore, from my minimal experience with 7 hoggs/nics...only the 1 will bite 50% of the time. I think you can generalize a nasty temperament to only a handful of snake species, and I don't think hogs or nics fit into that generalization.

Hey i have to comment that i think Hoggs get a bad rap for having temperment issues. If you are looking for a Hogg to be a breeder then you should leave it alone feed it when ever its hungry and handle it only when you need too. If you are looking for a pet that wont get to big I think Hoggs make amwazing pets, just like any animal the more time and effort you put into making the animal use to your smell and touch the better off your animal will be around you and your kids. Now i have to admit i do have a breeder hogg female who has quite a personality BUT even with the minimal exposer she gets to me and holding her or bathing her, within in this last year she has calmed down dramatically and would make a wonderful pet at this point. So i think that either a Hogg or Nic would make amazing pets. Personalities can't all be blamed on the snakes at this point, could you imagine getting a dog and not trainning it at all and then being upset with the dog when he doesnt know not to potty on the rug or how to roll over, doesnt that seem silly???? So base your new animal on some other feature.. I love my hoggs and would recommend them to anyone who is thinking of owning a great boa...

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind

Didnt mean to lean away from Nic's i think they are awesome too but have little personal experiance with them.

Well, it sure did catch my attention. I've got Rainbows and will be purchasing some hogs within the month, if not sooner. Although keeping proper humidity is not difficult for rainbows (it all depends on your enclosure) I really love them. If you are in fact squeamish, and want a snake to enjoy being handled a rainbow is not likely to be the right choice. Don't get me wrong...I adore my BRB's, but they won't sit and watch tv. Just do your research first to see what is best suited for your purpose (I know that's what you are doing).

Good luck,
Linda
