Question about bedding for culubrids.

sullman Jun 23, 2004 03:37 PM

I have been using shredded apsen bedding for my yellow rat snake(who has been escaped for almost two weeks, but still haven't given up hope!),my cali king and my motley corn. The bedding is this really fine shredded stuff. I mean really small pieces. I have seen some pictures of other peoples enclosures that have almost chipped aspen, with far larger pieces of wood. Now I was wondering which would be a better fit. The fine shredded stuff or the bigger chips? I would assume the fine stuff in case the snake were to every accidentally swallow any he could pass it easier.

Also what about that care fresh bedding? How is this stuff for snakes? I use it for my ferrets and it's wonderful but I don't know how any culubrids would do with it. Anyone ever use this stuff?

Thanks a lot,
Rob

I've heard some people say they use carefresh for snakes. The only gripe I can recall about it is price.

I use the aspen chips (they're not large squares, about the size of a snakes eye) for 2 of my sand boas and love it. I've heard some say they use the shredded (toothpick like) and some use the chips, but I've asked the question many times which is better and have not gotten a response indicating either is better.

Right now I'm trying Bed-A-Beast with one of my kings and think I'll put my other king and corn on it. It's natural looking, inexpensive, allows burrowing, easy to clean and you can feed on it.

The brand I use is Katee aspen bedding, it's bigger than what you have. Iv'e used both. Like the larger much better. AS far as the carefresh, a few years ago I bought a bag tried it hated it. Was too dusty the snakes started wheezing, switched back to aspen and everything was fine again. Also with the carefresh they would get a mouth full of the stuff when they ate. Katee aspen bedding I get from petsmart.

Thanks for the replies! I'll have to swing by petsmart this weekend to see if they have any Katee's cause I am fresh out of aspen bedding anyway. I'll be sure to stay away from that care fresh stuff for my snakes if it was causing your snakes to wheeze. I don't want to risk it. Like I said it is perfect for my ferrets though!
