Driftwood in enclosure.

pattymom Jun 23, 2004 06:27 PM

I was given a piece of driftwood that was previously used in a salt water tank to use in my new upgraded 29 gallon enclosure. I sterilized it in a pressure cooker to kill any bacteria or mites that might be in it (it had been in a barn for a while), but now am worried about the salt that must be in it.

Would that harm a black rat snake?

Thanks

Yes, it will sweat salt for some time unless you soak it really well. I suggest three 24 hour soaks using very hot water to get out the majority of it. Obviously you want to pour off the water and start fresh each time. It should be safe to use after that.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll just ditch the wood rather than take a chance. I moved him to the new tank today and he is digging it! I gave him a board to climb on and he is VERY happy. About 45 inches long now so the 10 gallon tank was cramping his style.
