MEALWORMS OR CRICKETS?

syntax Jun 23, 2004 06:30 PM

Im a new gecko owner, and I have to say I love my new leucistic female "Lucie". She is about 3 weeks old and has been doing well. When I first got her, I fed her vitamin dusted crickets. Just this week, ive been giving her dusted mini mealworms and now her waste seems to be watery, and have a whitish appearance to it. She still seems normal, but Im wondering if I should be worried. Should I stick to crickets or are mealworms okay. can anybody help?

Congrats on your new family member. I'm sure she will bring you many hours of enjoyment. To answer your question, a staple diet of mealworms will cause softer/somewhat runny stool. That is perfectly normal. In the long run, if you can switch her now to mealworms, you as her caregiver will be happier. Mealworms are easier to house, and gutload and overall deal with then crickets. Crickets are slightly more nutritous, however, with proper gutloading and vitamins mealworms is a great staple diet.

thanks!

I was worried for a minute. My gecko has had trouble getting crickets and I end up with too many crickets left over after each feeding, hence the switch to mealworms. That lil bit of info is a relief. Thanks again!
