Hey Gordon,
I was up on the mountain this evening collecting P. Subnitidus and there were queens walking around everywhere. I brought home about 20 of them. Are they likely to be fertile? They did not have wings.

Cable, if they had no wings it is a good bet they have mated. That is a good find, for some reason that species is one in which the sexuals are rarely collected. Im guessing you might be planning to attempt to rear them. Keep in mind that a few species of Pogonomyrmex find it necessary for the queens to forage during colony founding, P. californiucs is a good example. Since subnitidus is close to californicus, it may require it as well at least to some extent, but little is known about nest founding in this species. Keep me posted and feel free to email me.
