HELP!!!!! Tegu showing odd behavior

drykilllogic83 Jun 23, 2004 08:39 PM

This might be hard to explain but I will try. With her front left leg she is walking on the front(top) of her hand not with the palm down. So I guess I would say her hand is fold under. she does not seem to be in any pain or discomfort so that is good. It is just really sad to watch though. should I take her to the vet or what? please help.thanks!

Yes, I'd take it her to the vet. She could have broken something chasing down her food, if she banged into something. If it is broken, the sooner the vet sees her, the easier it will be to fix. If it starts to heal that way (if it is a break), she might need surgery to re-break it to fix it. Good luck, and let us know what happens with your little friend.

Needs calcium, and UVB light. That's my best guess. Eggs, shell and all, calcium supplement with D3 should do the trick. Take your tegu outdoors for about 30 minutes daily. Real sunlight, not direct sunlight is the best.

i'd say mbd was the cause, hopefully a break isn't the affect. resetting a young tegus ankle wouldn't be a good idea, the shock would probably kill it. supplements, a good diet and UV could fix the problem before it gets worse, and a splint would help.

I was not able to bring her in the day after the incident because of jury duty and also there was no reptile vet on duty for the night shift. So I took her in to the vet on Friday (two days after). The vet examined her and said that her leg did not appear to be broken but maybe sprained or a nerve was pinched. He gave her a shot of vitamins and a shot of some kind of pain killer and inflammatory. He also gave me some medicine called metacam that I need to give to her every day till it runs out. He told me if she does not begin to improve to make an appointment in a week. Hopefully this works for her and my sake.

You really need to listen about the uv and calcium. I have seen this occur many times before and if your vet isnt a herp expert, he/she wont know what to do anyway.

I really recommend replacing any and all UVB lighting and getting some calcium to put on his/her crickets and make sure you either see them be eaten or help your tegu eat a few every day to ensure the vitamins are passed along and soon.

Just a thought but a powerful one.
