BOX TURTLE QUESTION

twilightfade212 Jun 23, 2004 09:04 PM

I have three 3-toed box turtles (all males). One seems to be less active then the other two. It hides itself in the leaves. We have gotten a lot of rain lately and instead of crawling around and enjoying it like the others, it stays in that spot under the leaves It has a great appetite (I watched it down a bunch of strawberries today). It seems healthy to me. Could it possibly be because it is intimidated my the other two males, or is this perfectly normal? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Now that the breeding frenzy of spring is over and the weather is much warmer, the males here are much less active in general, and there are ones that are more subdued in the presence of others, probably because of dominance issues.
Fortunately our group has plenty of room to avoid eachother: make sure yours have plenty of spots to hide from eachother, have obstacles to prevent them from seeing eachother all the time, and enough room to feel as though they can put some distance between eachother.
A healthy appetite is a positive sign.

I have many three-toeds and they are the least active of any of my box turtles. They choose to hide most of the time wether it's sunny or rainy, cool or warm. Nesting, eating, and a very occasional wandering is all I see them for (mine have a 16x16 pen).

Thank you for your answer nathana..... The one shy one has moved around more than usual, so this has made me happy....I guess it is possible he is less active during the day time hours when I see them most, but he is remaining to be a healthy turtle and have no more concern about him.... Any more comments are welcome
