This giant croc look familiar?

fx Jun 24, 2004 02:38 AM

saw this online- they say it is a 20 foot hybrid croc from Thailand, being delivered to Parrot Jungle in Miami. Is this the famous "Yai" or just another 20 foot hybrid croc from the Bankok streets?

It is certainly one of the large hybrids from Samut Prakan. In fact while I was there in the summer of 2002 picking out Utan the "King of the Crocs" located in N. Myrtle Beach this particular/exact croc caught my attention (along with 3 others). I was completely mesmerized with Utan however and selected him because of his size, condition, extraordinary head and dentition. In fact after seeing Utan no other croc at the facility appealed to me. It was definitely love at first bite. Yai is still at Samut Prakan. I have never posted pics. They are available through email request...

Wow, Utan is huge. Nice teeth and head like you said. I wonder what the difference in temperment is between hybrids and regular old salites. I have seen a few pictures of Yai with people sitting around him or pulling him around by the tail, and in the Utan pictures also, these seem to be things people would never try with plain salties. Are the hybrids less aggressive as a rule?

I don't know if he's ever been captured, let alone measured. But I wonder how he stacks up.

I'll bet you 4 American Dollars that he is 18 foot 7 inches, and 2,440 lbs.

Gustav's story is pretty good. But the best croc stories I've ever heard (meaning stories with more character than carnage) are:

1. the Jala- Jala croc from the 1800s. whose skull is at Harvard and can be viewed here along with a version of his story:

http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2001/07.19/14-talltales.html

2. "Sweetheart" from Northern Australia, mid 1970s. This must be online somewhere... but there is a twist that some books don't report.

So, was Gustav caught? If so, does anybody have a link to the story?

"Utan" is without doubt the second largest crocodile I´ve ever seen."Yai" is only a lttle bit longer, but heavier and broader.
The biggest pure porosus I´ve seen was "Gomek", of course.

And then: All these giant Tomistoma at Samutprakarn, more than 5 m in length... On my way to the CSG meeting in Darwin, I saw Tomistoma of the same size in Singapore Zoo. Amazing!!!!

Hi Ralf,

There is another extremely large hybrid (C.porosus x siamensis) which is in the USA this animal is known as "Hank" and is off exhibit at Miami Metro, I think I recall Steve Conners (General Curator) mentioning "Hank" as about equal in size, I will be at Alligator Adventure next week and will ask Dr. Sam Seashole.
