The Eastern (B.g. gabonica) has two stripes on the head and the Western (B.g. rhinoceros) has one stripe.
The stripe goes from the eye.
On the picture you see the two stripes of a Bitis gabonica gabonica (the Eastern gaboonviper)

Well, there are some more differences. The Western gaboon has two horns on the nose, the Easter usualy hasn't. And the Western gaboon gets longer and heavier. The Western about 6 foot and the Eastern 4.
Some also consider them to be separate species.
