leaking egg

lzrdldy530 Jun 24, 2004 10:29 AM

I experienced something odd. An egg started to ooze 2 weeks ago. Just a drop on the top, where the shell seemed thin, which I left alone. That egg and the other from that clutch were already quite large, so I knew they were close. A few days later, another drop sat atop the egg. I kept sniffing but smelled nothing awry. My husband thought I should toss it, but my instincts told me to leave it be. Finally the first egg hatched during the night on the 22nd, and yesterday, upon returning home after work, the "leaker" had hatched!! It was very pale tan, which was strange, since every other hatchling from that pair has been burgundy in color, but seems perfectly healthy. Has anyone else ever had that happen? What do you think it meant? I have no method for determining the humidity in my deli-cup-incubator, but so far have 100% hatch rate (18 hatchlings), so I must be doing something right. Thanks for any insights. Terri

I had the same thing happen to one of my females 1st clutch. The leaking egg was much larger than normal and seems to have extra clear liquid. This egg has not yet hatched but hopefully it will since you experienced the same thing. Good luck with all your hatchlings.

A 100% hatch rate is awesome. I've been getting about 75% to hatch. Of course, many of my females are first year producers.

Anyway, yes, I've had a lot of eggs start to ooze a few weeks prior to hatching. Don't worry about it. I believe they burst due to too much moisture combined with the fact that there's a growing embryo inside, but so far, I've not had any problems hatching those eggs.

Thanks, Anthony,
I'm relieved to hear that the "leaking" is not uncommon. And I'm sure glad that I kept to my instincts and didn't destroy the "leaker".
