Moving -- How to safely transport a beardie cross country???

JLC Jun 24, 2004 11:17 AM

In about three weeks, we'll be moving from Virginia to Alabama. Professional movers will be packing and loading/unloading our stuff, but of course the animals will be traveling with us in the cars. We don't have room for their actual enclosures so we'll have to put them in something temporary until we get our stuff at the new house. They'll be in this temporary housing for at least a week...up to 10 days or so.

So....what would you recommend for the beardie? Something small enough to transport inside a fully packed minivan. I imagine some sort of rubbermaid or sterilite will work. But how do I go about feeding him and providing the lighting/heat he needs? I imagine he can go a week without his UVB bulb and be ok...but he's got to have the heat to digest his food, yes? And I can't imagine him going a week without eating! (He gets cranky if I'm even a couple hours late feeding him! LOL)

Sorry so wordy. Any and all advice on how to temporarily house and transport him safely will be greatly appreciated!

I would do the transporting in a small Rubbermaid bin with some towels or something to keep it comfy. Depending on the age of the dragon, if it's 1 yr. or more, I wouldn't even feed it during the trip. (as long as it's 3 or less days.) I would offer a drink once a day though.

Once you get there, buy a big bin & you can use a clamp lamp for basking & heat. You wouldn't have to worry about the UVB for the short time. UVB is a long term issue & 2 weeks wouldn't do any harm. Do supplement with D3 though.

Be careful not to leave them in the car while you eat or anything. They will cook very quickly.

Good luck.

Thanks. Yes, we'll be extremely careful about the animals in the car. Nothing living stays in a summer-time parked car for more than 30 seconds!

Shaggy just turned a year old. Your post was very helpful...I have a plan now!

THANKS!
