Question about genetics....

Spardawolf Jun 24, 2004 02:22 PM

Are hognose genetics like a corn snake? In other words if you have a red phase hognose, and you breed to a green phase, would you get all normals het for green and red? Or would you get hatchlings that look like each of the parents? I am really getting into researching these cute little guys, and am seriously thinking of purchasing some other color phases. They are just so interesting and would fit nicely into my breeding plans for the future. I also like the fact that they stay sort of small, and don't require alot of room. I am trying to find pics of green phase, because I am thinking of purchasing some more. Can anyone direct me to a breeder that has a nice selection of colors for sale? Thanks in advance and have a GREAT day!!!!!!!!!!!

The red and green phases of the western hog are simply extremes in the variation of a highly variable snake. And often, people will call a snake with any hints of red a "red phase" snake.

It is analogous to Okeetee coloring in cornsnakes. It isn't a single gene trait. If you breed two really red snakes together you should get red offspring.
