Panthers vs. the evil Hygrometers

chameleoncrow Jun 24, 2004 02:30 PM

Well, it pretty funny and odd at the same time, but my panthers, well three of them at least, seem to have grudges with the hygrometers i put in their cage. One would try to chew it to bits, the other two will try their best to rip it out of their affixed place with their hands and throw them to the ground. every few days i have to go and put the hygrometers back in their place. Weird little panthers i have. I wonder what they are thinking. Does anyone have similar expereince with their chameleons bothered by the hygrometers?

Now that's a new one! Maybe the clear cover on the hygrometer is showing a small reflection of a cham's face due to the angle of the lights hitting the plastic. Maybe try moving the thing under a leaf so it is shaded? Or maybe you just have weird panthers!

Actually I have another odd one to share.

My first cham was a huge male veiled. His cage had several glass panels along with coated screen. At a certain time of year the light from my window hit the glass at just right angle and created a reflection when he was basking. He would rush over and display for hours. So, I taped a piece of cardboard over the glass on the inside. I come home from work to find him pushing the cardboard away and wedging himself between it and the glass...he was certain the evil rival was just lurking behind it somewhere.

lol
great stories, i'm literally laughing out loud.
That's a good example of the intelligence of chameleons. They aren't super-smart, but they are quite clever in the ways they need to survive.
My male veiled can smell the female right next to him, or she/he are communicating through the tell-tale "low frequency vibrations". He scratches at the lights sometimes, incandescant and fluorescant, because he sees them as a way out. That shows he is smart in the way that he doesn't claw at a random spot to get out, and that he looks for tunnels/holes/doorways. He also comes right up to the front of his cage (where the door is) when I am in the room, because he knows I might open it up for cleaning/misting/feeding.
The cage closest to the feeders and supplements (all in one corner) is home to one of the females, and whenever I fiddle around with things there, she will come up to the door and wait for food. Other times she looks at me like she's wanting food, but she doesn't come right up and demand it like that. She knows when i'm collecting stuff from a containder or i'm shaking something up (supplements) that food is coming!

I have never seen him attack his hygrometer, however! It is in a shaded area, like someone suggested to do, which sounds very logical to do.
