Largest snake debate

worldsocold Jun 24, 2004 06:16 PM

I was told that the anaconda was the largest snake in the world. However I believe that the burm/Retic is the largest. I consider length the largest facter not weight. I know this is a preference but what do you say? Length or width?

I understand this is in the retic forum so i expect there to be a lot of length rather than weight just as if i put this in the anaconda forum id expect there to be more weight than length.

(this is in both Forums with words changed to fit the correct forum)

What your are going to find is that retics are the large/longer snakes on average. But condas can also get that large. So It is kinda up to how someone looks at the it. Average or possibilty.

Pretty simple actually, the LONGEST snake is the Retic...largest in GIRTH, the Conda, just whatever you base your judgement on my biggest, if you think the biggest snake is big girth and length, you can meet in the middle with something like a burm or Rock

I believe there are two seperate records currently being held. One is the "Longest" Currently held by a Retic at over 32' and the "Largest" Currently held by the Anaconda at over 300Ibs.

Just something to make you think though.
Just imagine a Burm, Rock, Retic, Anaconda Ect. living out in the Farout forest, Somewhere that is 100% Untouchable by Humans. Do to no Human contact this area would have all the food that a snake could possibly want. I have seen some Unbelievable Burms, Rocks and Retics in Captivity at or above 20' living in Roomsize Cages and still considered Young animals under 10-20yrs. of age. Now look at the Snake in the wild on top of the Food chain in the deep forest where no man has ever seen eating everything it wants and living to be upwards of 40yrs. old. IMO. The Potential of there being snakes in the wild that reach or excede 40-50-60' is not to far off track. So far there has been several "Undocumented" sightings of Giants in the wild. There has been Several people that after venturing off into the forest where never seen or heard from again. Just think of the potential of one of these animals in a locality like this and it Makes you realize that The Movies "Anaconda" and "Python" are not all that far from the truth.

Just my .02cents worth that is prob. not worth that

Actualy, food is much harder to come by in the wild. These giant snakes feed very infrequently and are less likely to be as healthy in the wild also. There are numerouse factors in the wild that would shorten the lifespan as well as the growth of these creatures. On the other hand, in captivity they can be assured a regular feeding schedule and much better health when kept under optimal conditions by dedicated keepers. They will then live much longer and grow much bigger and have a healthier life. That is why we rarely ever see "TRUE" 20ft specimens caught in the wild. However, there are many in captive breeding programs that are relatively young and still growing! Overall, I feel that the retic has the most potential of becoming a true giant. Only time will tell.

Just imagine this. If there is a place in the wild that Humans can not get to then I bet there is a Large population of all animals there as well becouse Most animals tend to move away from Humans in order to survive. So, the animals out there would have more food items to choose from and the prey would also be more often encountered. As people force their way through the Rainforest I am Sure that More Giants will be found. I doubt they will be 50' but I am sure there are 30' animals out there that have been lucky enough to stay away from Human contact.
Just a thought. Maybe a personal dream??
Take care

Nothing wrong with that. I would love to see actual proof of real giants still in the wild. We'll all keep hoping!

Rumor is that Baby at Serpent Safari has died. If true, would that make Bob's Fluffy the largest living snake in captivity(especially with Samantha gone)? Also, does anyone know Fluffy's current size? The pic on Bob's site says 310 pounds and 24 feet, but is a few years old and it says she's still growing.

I have not heard this and I live about 20 minutes away from Serpent Safari and have seen "Baby" many times. Below is a link to a pic of her and her measurements.
