Largest snake debate

worldsocold Jun 24, 2004 06:18 PM

I was told that the anaconda was the largest snake in the world. However I believe that the burm/Retic is the largest. I consider length the largest facter not weight. I know this is a preference but what do you say? Length or width?

This is in the Retic and anaconda forum as well, Im not sure what to expect, but I know this will be interesting.

I would say wieght would be the considering factor because even though a giraffe is taller than an elephant, the elephant is still considered bigger. Just my opinion though.

Does any one know the exact redord in lenght and weight of the top 3, conda, burm, and retic? Seems that I read an article on "Baby" the burmese python in one of my reptiles magazines a couple years ago or so. Seems like it was the largets living snake in the USA at 27 feet. Not sure though.

I remember Baby but I think it was measured at 21 or 23 feet, over-estimating the length of snakes is notoriously common.

I believe anacondas are reputed to grow heavier but retics longer I would think "biggest" would be weight and "longest" of course length.

I would have to agree with the consesus that Anaconda's are the largest. When comparing the two common contenders, anaconda's and retics then one would truely have to consider the weight factor. When considering the two largest specimens of each the retic was a smidgeon over 33' however teh anaconda was 28' (if my memory serves me correct) and had about twice the girth and weight of the retic. When comparing two giants, I think one must compensate the 5' difference with the extra weight and give the record to the anaconda. Retics are the longest but condas are the largest. Todd

I knew the record length for the retic. Does anyone have a pic of any of the largest recorded snake? Or know a website I could go to to see one?

This one is for Retics: www.mccarthyboas.com/BigSnake3.html
This one is for Boas: www.mccarthyboas.com/BigSnake.html

This link is for a site that has some info on "World Records"
The only bad thing about this site is it has way to many pop up windows. So if you don't like pop up windows don't click on this link.members.tripod.com/wellsking/worldrecs.htm
