Could this be appropriate diet for a Forsten's Tortoise?

Tortuga Jun 24, 2004 09:52 PM

And I quote from a KingSnake Ad today in the Tortoise section:

"They are feeding great on cantaloupe, strawberries, mango, bannannas, moistened dry catfood, pinky mice, and hibiscus leaves. They do turn thier noses to romaine lettuce and Tortoise Chow."

Never heard of tortoises eating pinky mice. Yikes! Can someone shed some light on this? I know other Turtle eat all manner of worms, snails, fish, insects...but a tortoise eating pinky mice???? Needless to say this surprised me.

Thanks for any comments...

It's a perfectly fine diet for Forsten's or Elongata. Go real light on the banana and you'll be fine.

If you're considering a Forsten's the husbandry is very similar to Yellowfoots.

Pinky mice are a very common food item for omniverous turtles and tortoises.

There are several tort species that are omnivorous. Unsure of the factual connection but most of the ones found in tropical areas are known to be. Indotestudo, G.Carbonaria, G.Denticulata & Kinixys are all documented omnivores.

I've even heard of a redfoot chase down and consume a garter snake. Mine regularly eat worms and pinkies.
