hiding and eating

Nicko Jun 20, 2003 01:29 AM

I've had my two month old Leo now for 3 days. The first day I had her she didnt eat I assume because she was getting settled down. The next night, she ate some mealworms. She wouldnt go anywhere near the dish I set in there with the worms, but when I dropped them right in front of her, she snatched them up, sometimes taking them right out of the tweezers.

I gave her quite a few worms, because she kept on taking whatever I would put in front of her. I tried feeding her today in the same way, but she didnt want to eat. Will she just eat enough worms that she needs, or will she just eat and eat? I thought maybe I gave her too much the night before and she was still full from them.

Also, she stays in either of her two hides almost constantly. Is this normal, or should she be out walking around more? I was able to feed her the night before because I caught her out of the hide, but she's not out often. Is it ok to take her out of the hide to try and feed her or is that too much stress for her?

Just trying to get it right...

It will probably take her a little longer to get used to her new home. Then she'll start coming out more. Also, the young ones tend to be more shy than adults. As she gets bigger she'll loosen up.

Have you tried dropping a worm or two right outside the entrance to her hide? Sometimes that will coax them out. Or you can toss a cricket or two in and herd them into the hide. If she goes after them you'll be able to hear her diving for them.

Good Luck!

she still might be full from yesterdays feeding. make sure you have a ver low bowl she can see into and climb into to eat. she sounds like she is doing good. it may take her a bit to get used to everything and come out more but you also have to remember leopardgeckos are nocturnal so if ya dont see her out durring the day she may very well be sleeping. if you notice she isnt eating at all, its ok to take her out of her hide to feed her just for the first couple of weeks or maybe just a week ,depending on your gecko, dont handle her too much, let her settle in and get used to her new surroundings and new smells ect. your doing fine keep us updated
