Birth complications HELP!!!

PanamaRed Jun 24, 2004 10:31 PM

I have a female Hogg Island that started to give birth, 4 hours ago she passed 5 dry very hard slugs, I am geussing she retained them from last season (tanish brown). She is now pushing around like they do after the babys are born and she looks like she is super loaded still, but not contracting any more. Is there anything I can do to help her out? All of my local vets are idiots, I usualy have to tell them what to do, but I am at a loss here on this one. Any advise would be great.

Thanks, Ed

Try misting her really well with slighly warm water. A lot of times that gets them going.

I had already done that. It seems like she thinks she's done?

You are absolutely sure that the snake is not bound or suffering from dystocia. If there is a slug adhesed to the oviduct and you induce contractions, she could tear apart her oviducts and anything else in there.

There is a significant risk of death by inducing contractions this way.

Find a good vet and diagnose the problem before you treat it.

Good luck.

She was sold to me as ovulating a while back, and was apparently carrying a whole litter from the previous season!! There was a mass of old slugs that had her bound up, I gently massaged them appart and she cleaned house. There were hardened rotten babys, as well as slugs with the consistancy of wood!! She seems alright now, I have her in a different enclosure, and will get her to a vet to check her out just to be sure. I am discusted with the fellow who sold her in this condition!!! It makes me want to puke!....

There's a great chance of bacterial infection with all the rotting material in her. Consult a knowledeable vet for possilbe treatment with Amikacin or the likes.

Best of luck,

Barry
